Mumbai Indians is the most successful IPL team winning the title 4 times but the only worrying fact is that it has happened in all the odd years- 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019. Mumbai Indians finished the table at the top last year and winning the title against Chennai super kings by mere margin of 1 run is known for having a balanced squad on its side.
This year too, the Indians have selected a very balanced side on paper with a very strong core and other players around it to get them going. Let’s see what it is to be looked out for this year and their probable Eleven.
Top buys in the Auction and Trade windows:
1) Trent Boult (6.5 Crores) – Lethal bowling attack
2) Nathan Counter-Nile (8 Crores) - New Ball quickster
3) Chris Lynn (2 Crores) - Provides flexibility with batting line up
4) Prince Balwant Rai (20 Lakhs) - Leg spinner
Newbies to look out for?
Mumbai has had a habit for scouting, exploring and throwing surprise players at their oppositions each year- Bumrah, markande, Rahul Chahar and this year it can be Left Arm Spinner Anukul Roy or Leg Spinner Prince Balawant Rai.
While Anukul has been in the team for quite some time but is yet to make a name for himself in the IPL circle, Rai is yet to play any senior cricket and has played only junior cricket for Punjab.
In the foreign circle, Sherfane Rutherford is one of the young players that MI has traded in and can be a potential back for Hardik Pandya or Pollard in case of any uncertain events.
What to look out for?
Mumbai Indians have never been a story of a single player but partnerships and combinations of players. This year too they will want those partnerships to play a vital role for their Success:
1. Rohit Sharma-QDK
The opening partnership was always an issue for the team management which was resolved last year by having two great openers and experienced leaders to lead the team from front. QDK was the highest run scorer for the franchise last year. The team has also confirmed the same, keeping Lynn for flexibility in the line up towards the later stage of tournament.
2. Pollard – Hardik Pandya
The Pollard Pandya duo have always been the talk for Mumbai’s Paltan i.e their fans. Both are legendary finishers and have always turned games exciting for the franchise. The combo has the ability to win matches for the Indians. Additionally, Pollard was the winning captain for TKR at the CPL and had an amazing season which will help the franchise.
Mumbai lacks the spinning experience which other teams have. Krunal is the only experienced spinner in the squad with Rahul having a decent season last year. Considering the current pitch conditions in UAE, spinners might play a crucial role in the teams bowling unit. For MI these 2 have to play their best game or else the management might have to look for some “Young exciting players”.
1 Rohit Sharma (C) 2 QDK (Wk) 3 Suryakumar Yadav 4 Ishan Kishan 5 Kieron Pollard 6 Krunal Pandya 7 Hardik Pandya 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile 9 Rahul Chahar 10 Trent Boult 11 Jasprit Bumrah
1 Chris Lynn 2 Anukul Roy 3 Shrefane Rutherford 4 Dhawal Kulkarni / Mitchell Mcclenaghan
The probable XI looks very balanced on paper with deep and powerful batting line up while on the bowling side the captain will have more than enough options to try with. Mumbai Indians has to not only beat the jinx of “Not wining in even years” but also the fact that last time the team lost all their five matches in UAE.
For Mumbai to defend their title they will have to chase it from the very first match itself and not pick up towards the end which they like to do every year. Though they are favorites for the title, for now we will keep them our favorites to qualify for the play offs for sure!
